Most people who have a growing relationship with God read their Bible on a regular basis.
Jesus said, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5)

In other words Jesus wants us to stay connected to Him. We connect best to Jesus when we connect to His word. It is how he guides, instructs, and encourages us.

Regular time in the Bible is one of the tools God uses to grow and deepen our faith in him. It is how we discover who God is and it gives substance to our faith.

A Bible reading plan is a great tool to get started in developing a regular habit of reading God’s word. A reading plan will give you direction for where to read, and will help you stay on track in your Bible reading. Here are a few tips for getting started:

1.  Choose a time and location: When developing a new habit in your life, consistency and predictability are important.

  • Choose a time that you can focus on your reading with a fresh mind that is free of distractions – early in the morning, late at night, or somewhere in between.
  • Choose a location that is quiet and free of distraction. You want to be able to focus on what God is teaching you in the word and not be distracted by the pressures of life.

2.  Choose a plan: There are several great reading plans listed on this page. Here are a few keys to consider when choosing a plan:

  • Choose a plan that you will succeed at.
  • Choose a plan that matches your spiritual growth goals.

3.  Get a pen and journal: Take time to record lessons and insights God teaches you as you open up the word.  A great way to journal is to use the acrostic SOAP. SOAP stands for:

  • Scripture: As you go through your reading plan write down the key verse or verses from your reading for the day.
  • Observation: Write out what you see from the scripture. What does the verse say? What is happening in the verse? What truths are being taught? What is the context?
  • Application:  Write how you will be different today because of what you read. How will you think or act differently?
  • Pray: Write out a prayer response from the passage.

4.  Stick with it: If you miss a day, don’t sweat it. Just pick up your reading again on the current day that you are on. The important thing is to not give up.
